Most wine lovers don't associate Chile with pinot noir. But those in the know, oh they KNOW. This tiny isolated vineyard is perfect for the most fickle of grapes, and the resulting wine is nothing short of astonishing. We'd put this up against the world's best without a moment's hesitation.

Why do we love this wine?

It’s time to stand up and take notice of Chilean pinot noir (if you haven’t already). This example comes from the Talinay vineyard, a miniscule plot located 12kms from the Pacific Ocean and nestled adjacent to Fray Jorge National Park. The soil is fractured limestone with calcium carbonate, providing exceptional drainage and imparting chalky minerality in the wine. Hand-harvested fruit is 65% destemmed and 35% whole cluster fermented. One full year in top-notch French oak rounds out the process ahead of bottling. The wine is vivid in colour, complex, fresh and bright. You’ll find stoney notes, red fruits, earthiness, and a creamy texture. If you were lucky enough to get a case of the 2019, then you already know what we're talking about. If not, well then here's your chance to get on board.

Review

Robert Parker

The 2020 Talinay Pinot Noir was produced with grapes from the original plantation in Talinay in 2006. It's only 12.3% alcohol and has kept a very low pH (3.48) denoting very good freshness. It fermented with 40% full clusters with native yeasts and matured in used barrels for 12 months. The limestone in the soil is a cushion against heat, and in Talinay, the wines are quite homogeneous from vintage to vintage. Like as I see in other varieties (the Sauvignon Blanc, the Chardonnay), this is more austere and mineral, with a chalky minerality and a dry, long finish. This is an austere Pinot from a warm year. But the nose is very expressive, clean, open and precise, with no oak whatsoever. They harvested very early in 2020. 14,400 bottles produced.
