Featuring Suckling's #1 Wine of 2023 (with two 100pt scores). This is Mendoza's elite. If Mendoza classified wines as Grand Crus, these would certainly earn that title.

Why do we love this case?
Gran Enemigo is the flagship range of cab francs highlighting the differences between some of the greatest single vineyards in Mendoza. They are all drinking wonderfully well right now (I was lucky enough to taste at the winery in 2019) but will also age gracefully for a long time. El Enemigo is something of a dream team in Mendoza. It’s the creation of Adrianna Catena, youngest daughter of Nicolas Catena (founder of Catena Zapata) and Alejandro Vigil, the chief winemaker of Catena Zapata. The pedigree doesn’t get much better than that. Their focus on cabernet franc has been at the forefront of the modern Mendoza wine movement, as has their single site approach that is modelled after the practices of Burgundy and other Old World regions.
1x Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Cabernet Franc 2019
Red — Cabernet Franc
Mendoza — Argentina
A 100 Point score isn't easy to come by. Two of them? Unheard of. Both from globally renowned critics in Parker and Suckling? That's a unicorn wine to-be. It seems impossible until you taste it, and then it all makes sense. It follows the thread of the other wines in its umami complexity, mineral showcase, and deft delivery of fruit. Yet somehow, amongst all of these simply incredible wines, this is just... more. More balanced, more obscure, more harmonious, more ethereal, more elite. This is the mark by which all future cab franc will be judged, and I gotta say, its set the bar high.

1x Gran Enemigo Cepillo Cabernet Franc 2019
Red — Cabernet Franc
Mendoza — Argentina
There is a thread of deep complexity running through all of these wines, but this the most intricate, in my opinion. Limestone dust, soy-sauce, sea breeze, brine, mushroom - the 'super-savoury umami' descriptors have come out to play. It has luscious shape and lift in the glass, and the intricacies of the wine unfold and reveal themselves at rest. Dig in, but take your time - this wine's got a story to tell.

1x Gran Enemigo Chacayes Cabernet Franc 2019
Red — Cabernet Franc
Mendoza — Argentina
A moody, brooding, intricate wine marked by complex savoury nuance. There's mushroom, rich earth, and a bit of brine swirling at the centre. Raspberry, plums, bramble. Black and blue fruits neatly compiled in a very ripe, very rich fruit salad. The real star is the – forgive me – cab franc-ness of it all; capsicum absolutely shines, spiced and rich and fresh both aromatically and on the palate. Quintessential cab franc? yes. Absolutely essential? For any red wine lover out there, you betcha.

I always look forward to drinking this wine. Like, sit-by-my-door-waiting-for-the-post look forward to it. And here it is... despite the lofty expectations, it did not disappoint. Of all of these wines, I believe this one to be most broadly appealing to the Australian palate that has an affinity for richness, boldness, brashness. This is full bodied, delivering red fruit tightly and succinctly while flanked by unending nuance and lively mineral complexity. What a wine... delightful.
