If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world. Luckily, there’s none of that pomposity here.

1x Matahiwi Estate Reserve Pinot Noir 2021
Red — Pinot Noir
Wairarapa — New Zealand
Pinot is a really tough grape to handle at the best of times, let alone when on a budget. Every now and then, though, you do find some gems. This is one of those. Made by the team at Matahiwi, who are known to over-deliver, this pinot does, and then some! Light and bright, it ticks the fruit, complexity and pinosity boxes with a flourish. A firm favourite of our customers and staff, excitement levels get pretty high when Matahiwi enters the building.

1x Brightwater Pinot Noir 2019
Red — Pinot Noir
Nelson — New Zealand
Concentration is the key word here; pure, focused Nelson fruit that absolutely sings. There is an expectation of premium pinot that it has genuine presence in the mouth, this meets and surpasses that expectation. Red cherries and raspberries sit on top of fine grain tannins. The acid is seamlessly stitched into every part of the wine, giving it a real 'line-drive' feel. There's tart winter strawberry and a bit of red apple on offer, too. Most pleasing is the weight of the wine on the palate. A fine example of Kiwi pinot that's ready to drink, but will certainly develop further with a short spell in your cellar.

1x Pepper Tree Wines Block C6 Pinot Noir 2021
Red — Pinot Noir
Orange — Australia
Peppy pinot from a Halliday favourite? Yes please. This is all it sets out to be, and much more. This is every bit as joyous as this variety gets. Pinot noir is becoming somewhat of a unicorn these days. And if we’re talking about an already hard-to-get wine out of a hard-to-get region, then it’s like finding a unicorn with a platinum horn. Sometimes days at the tasting bench are exhausting, but wines like these breathe energy into what can be a fruitless (pun intended) task. This is bright and peppy pinot, mingling sour cherry and cola with a dose of well-handled spice along the lines of clove and cinnamon. It reminds me of a summer's day sipping on spritzes in the sunshine, and it's every bit as enjoyable.

1x Rob Dolan Wines Pinot Noir 2023
Red — Pinot Noir
Victoria — Australia
You'll know Rob Dolan Wines for their reputation for excellence. They've been making some of the most iconic wines of the Yarra Valley and broader Victorian region for decades. This is, of course, no exception to that spirit of excellence; fresh red raspberries and pulpy cherry meat fine, slippery tannin structure. There is sappy acidity that frames the enduring finish. A brilliantly delivered wine from a master of their craft.

1x Helen & Joey Alena Pinot Noir 2018
Red — Pinot Noir
Yarra Valley — Australia
From a producer we love, a varietal we adore, and a region with a global reputation - what's not to love? Nothing, as it turns out. The Elena pinot is excellent in every way. Red cherries and sappy rhubarb mix with spice, fennel, and pepper. The tannin structure is quite open stitch, making for a soft, luxurious mouthfeel. The acid feels brand new; plenty of freshness and pickup left in the tank. This is a 2018 (iconic Yarra Valley vintage, by the way) pinot with a way to go. Dig in, pinot loving mofos, this ones for you.

1x Elysian Springs Silent Waters Pinot Noir 2022
Red — Pinot Noir
Adelaide Hills — Australia
This is a clever wine, in a lot of ways. It's pretty hard to find great pinot noir at the moment. The last few vintages have been tough, and getting maximum flavour with a minimal pricetag is a near impossible task. One clever way to build texture and complexity in pinot noir is to partially ferment the whole berry clusters. The producer of this wine employed this method with 30% of the fruit before letting the wine age in 50% new French oak. What’s in the bottle is elegant, yet concentrated. Fruit is expressed as cherries, plums and strawberries and there are secondary notes of spice and earth. You’ll feel semi-serious drinking this lovely pinot, even if it is a Tuesday night in your PJs.
