Why do we love this case?
If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world. Luckily, there’s none of that pomposity here. Here’s a mix covering some of the very best regions in the world. From perfumed and pretty to dark and sexy, there’s something for every occasion and every food pairing.
2x Yarraloch Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019
Red — Pinot Noir
Yarra Valley — Australia
What is it about single vineyard pinot noir, that has us going gaga? France’s tiny Burgundy plots gave us the concept, but it’s the freedom to explore in Australia, that has the most curious minds in search of the unique plots to plant pinot. It’s a persistent pursuit of pleasure, that only the most determined wine minds seek out. The Yarra is a great place to plant, it is now a pinot wonderland, and this single vineyard is exactly what we are looking for. Full of charm, character and silken loveliness, it’s concentrated with black cherry, and damson plum, with a bright, minerally acidity that builds with sandalwood spice and persistent length. Think of an iron fist in a velvet glove - we are living for it. Enjoy, our fellow pinot loving Mofo’s.
You’d pay $40 full price.

2x Matahiwi Estate Reserve Pinot Noir 2020
Red — Pinot Noir
For New Zealand pinot at this price, it’d be fair not to expect much. It’s a really tough grape to handle at the best of times, let alone when on a budget. Every now and then, though, you do find some gems. This is one of those gems.
You’d pay $35 full price.

2x Siskin Pinot Noir 2021
Red — Pinot Noir
Victoria — Australia
Elegant pinot noir with depth and power. There is real brightness and lift to the red fruit profile; fresh strawberries, tart cherry, and sappy currants jump out of the glass. Where pinot can often be a little shy and timid, this has weight and real presence in the glass. It’s structured and rich, and the fruit persists right through the finish. This is pinot that can be enjoyed just fine on it’s own but equally won’t go missing amongst big, bold flavours - good for steak night, pasta night, or movie night.
You’d pay $33 full price.

2x Gapsted Limited Release Pinot Noir 2021
Red — Pinot Noir
King Valley — Australia
Gapsted are nestled up in Victoria’s High Country (in Gapsted, of all places), and have to be one of Australia’s leading wineries for value. Pinot is a tricky grape to grow at the best of times, and it’s all the harder when you’re working to a budget. But these guys know what they’re doing. Ripe, red berries and cherries, sizzling spice, crunchy herbs and a dash of that something magic that makes pinot the captivating mystery it is. A light lick of French oak gives it the springboard it needs to jump to life on the palate. Cracking stuff!
You’d pay $31 full price.

2x Lighthouse Pinot Noir 2020
Red — Pinot Noir
Waipara Valley — New Zealand
‘From the edge of a country on the edge of the earth’ is their tagline, and here is a beacon to stop you in your wine-loving tracks and make you look twice. From vines on the edge of the small island in the South Pacific, silhouetted by the Southern Alps, comes wine on the cutting edge. And if I was a lighthouse keeper, I’d want something good in my glass on dark and stormy nights, so lucky these guys have come to the rescue.
Kiwi pinot at this price is worth stopping for alone. With a solid score from Wine Orbit and a package this good, send a message in a bottle home to the folks. With all the spiced dark cherry and slightly herbal earthiness you might look for, along with silkiness and approachability, you’ll be thankful you saw the light.
You’d pay $30 full price.

2x Sidewood Estate Stablemate Pinot Noir 2021
Red — Pinot Noir
Adelaide Hills — Australia
Adelaide Hills excellence. This is pinot with such vibrancy it practically dances about the palate. Strawberry sweetness in chorus with bright cherry lift. Hand sorted and cold soaked (that means the grapes get a little pre-ferment ice bath - as if they’d just played a game of footy - to lock in freshness and fruit purity). There is real care and precision in the winemaking here and it shows in the overall focus and quality of the end-product.
You’d pay $25 full price.
