New Zealand has reached the elite level of pinot production where it is mentioned in the same breath as Burgundy. Central Otago (which we feature here) is neck-and-neck with Oregon for claiming the title of 'best pinot noir region in the new world.'

Why do we love this case?
This is a collection of some seriously good NZ drops. The wines are brightly fruited, yes, but there's so much more on offer. Regional typicity, minerality, distinct terroir, earth, rubber, nettle, florals, oak, game... there is a seemingly unending amount to overturn and discover in these wines - a pinot lovers delight.
2x Bendigo Hills The Cob Cottage Pinot Noir 2019
Red — Pinot Noir
Central Otago — New Zealand
Bendigo Hills is the semi-arid subregion of Central Otago, with north facing terraced slopes, famous for growing some of the region’s finest pinot noir. Planted in 2003, The Cob Cottage vineyard is certified organic, where the grapes are allowed to reach their prime ripeness before being handpicked and fermented.
The region is famous for its deep and powerful pinots, and this is no exception. The wine is aged for a year in 25% new French oak, which adds texture and a few notes of cedar to the fruit profile of cherries, sour plums and cranberries that abound in the wine. There is also a very alluring mushroom note that is present on the nose and long, complex finish. So much to love in this wine- give it some air and it’ll only get better.

2x Brightwater Pinot Noir 2021
Red — Pinot Noir
Nelson — New Zealand
The most recent release from Brightwater Vineyards has all the hallmarks of classic Nelson pinot noir - vibrant juicy fruit that's packing a bit of punch. The fruit is edging toward Turkish delight and raspberry drops but it never veers fully into the confectionary space. Instead it remains focused and luscious and full. The acid drives the wine through the finish, collecting all that fresh fruit vibrancy along the way and delivering it neatly to the back of the palate where it leaves lasting impression. Classic Nelson pinot that promises a lot and still manages to over deliver. So sad to see this producer go, but as they say: all good things...

2x Te Pa Signature Series Pinot Noir 2020
Red — Pinot Noir
Marlborough — New Zealand
You could be forgiven for thinking Marlborough is all about savvy b, but chat to the locals and they can’t stop carrying on about pinot noir (and chardy for that matter, but that’s a tipple for another day). The Te Pa Signature pinot has all the classic elegance and poise coupled with intensity and focus, but its the fruit that’s knocking our socks off. Brimming with pulpy dark red cherry and winter strawberry, the fruit persists from start to finish. A little bit of oak nuance and some fine grain tannin gives the wine shape and structure. There’s plushness and generosity set against a tart, sappy backdrop. This is a wine in perfect balance showing its full potential.
