Included in this case:

1x Luciano Arduini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2019

Red — Other Red

Veneto — Italy

Oh yeah! This is one reliable wine - our favourite Amarone della Valpolicella has achieved another cracking score from Luca Maroni. In fact, we’re talking a perfect 99 points for the 2019 vintage. Did someone say something about consistency? Either Luciano Arduini has Luca Maroni in his pocket, or the wine is absolutely, irrefutably, irrevocably, the best Amarone we’ve ever had. Amarone (dry red wine from semi-dried grapes; brings more concentrated flavour, acid, body… everything) You’d expect to pay triple figures for any example, let alone one of the best. But here we are with something that smacks of fruitcake, super-rich chocolate and spice, plus heady wafts of oaken-rich deliciousness. There is nothing in moderation here. More is more is more.

You’d pay $130 full price.

1x Lornano Supertuscan Commendator Enrico 2018

Red — Cabernet Blend

Italy — Italy

This is beyond Super Tuscan. This feels like Ultra Tuscan. A wine of such immeasurable complexity, power and dynamism that we’ve heard whispers it’s going to star in a Marvel movie all of its own. A wine with such long-term potential that, rumour has it, cellars themselves give in to time before it does. Immediately cutting-edge, but imbued with the feel of timeless tradition. This wine is also a favourite amongst our mofo’s, and even though we promise ourselves that we’ll save a bottle for later- we never do. Guess it’s time to stock up!

1x Cosmo Sicilia Rosso IGT 2019

Red — Red Blend

Sicily — Italy

What, again? Luca Maroni, Italy’s greatest wine critic, has given this red a staggering 99 points for the third vintage in a row. Just to be clear, his scale goes up to 99. This is the ceiling, the pinnacle, sheer perfection.

This wine is a blend of Sicilian native nero d’avola, and the French cabernet sauvignon. The combo produces a powerful blend of plush, ripe berries and structure, with future to age for many years. It shows balance in spite of the power, with great freshness and acidity giving lift and relief from the densely concentrated body. It’s a crossover hit really - you get the exotic nero and the familiar cabernet. An absolute delight that won’t last long.

You’d pay $80 full price.

1x La Bollina Actarus Primitivo di Manduria 2021

Red — Primitivo

Puglia — Italy

We can’t get enough of the primitivo that Bollina produces in Italy. This one has a crazy 98-point score from Luca Maroni and hails from Manduria, a little region in the heel of the boot that is known for the variety. The fruit is hand harvested and done a bit late in order to increase concentration, power and richness. There’s blackberry, cherry and plum with a backbone of tobacco, mocha and cocoa. This isn’t wine for the faint of heart, but rather for those that want something dense and dark in the glass.

You’d pay $60 full price.

1x Cascina Ca'Rossa Funsu Langhe Nebbiolo 2021

Red — Nebbiolo

Italy — Italy

"So, what is Funsu? There’s a funny family story. Grandfather Alfonso of the Ferrio family was affectionately known as Funsu - and this wine is dedicated to his legacy. Made entirely from nebbiolo, and blended from two vineyards, the intention is to balance an elegant soft nebbiolo, with a vineyard offering more tannin structure. But the trick is, this wine is made entirely in tank - so you can drink it young and pretty. The characters here are all about pleasure you'll want this weekend, not in the next century. Roses, violets and sour cherry pucker with subtle tea leaves and a slight earthiness. Bust out the truffles, the mushrooms, the hard cheese, the risotto... heck, even the rabbit ragu. The food will only get better with this delightful red.

You’d pay $65 full price.

1x Giribaldi Dame & Fuet Langhe Rosso 2019

Red — Red Blend

Piedmont — Italy

The Langhe region of Piemonte famously encompasses both Barolo and Barbaresco. These are of course the high-end wines with high-end price tags made from 100% nebbiolo. This is what gets the most attention internationally from the region, but it isn’t generally what the locals drink. For their imbibing pleasure, they turn to Langhe Rosso, which is usually a blend of dolcetto, barbera and of course nebbiolo. They aren’t too fussed with what goes into it as long as it tastes good. All the way over here in Australia though, we’re a bit more pedantic about what ends up in the bottle.

This organic Langhe Rosso from the boutique winery of the Giribaldi family has the typical components of dolcetto, barbera and nebbiolo, but there’s also a surprising touch of pinot noir in the blend. It’s medium-bodied, ruby red in colour and bursting with aromas of cherry, redcurrant and tobacco. On the palate the fruit carries through, but is accompanied by hints of vanilla and licorice undoubtedly drawn from the wine’s generous time in seasoned oak. It’s easygoing enough to enjoy a glass on its own, but the acid structure is plenty apparent for pairing with savoury, meaty dishes. Try it with carne cruda, agnolotti del Plin or brasato. You’ll feel like you’re sitting under the shadow of the Italian Alps.

You’d pay $39 full price.
