The Yarra Valley is only a short drive from the Melbourne CBD, and you’ll find some absolutely world-beating cellar doors here. So where to start? Here’s a few of our absolute faves.

@chandonaus

Domaine Chandon

The Australian domaine of one of the largest producers of premium bubbles has a decadent presence in the heart of Coldstream, with seriously impressive views of the surrounding Yarra Ranges. And it’s well appointed too - offering a tasting bench, restaurant, lounge bar and winemaking tours if you’re keen to see behind the scenes.

727 Maroondah Hwy, Coldstream VIC 3770, open 7 days.

@dominqueportet

Dominique Portet

9th generation winemaker Dominique Portet founded his eponymous winery back in 2000, with a desire to make wines on a site he believed rivaled the terroir of Bordeaux. Here you’ll find the latest chapter in the storied history of a winemaking family dating back to 1700s - Dominique’s son Ben now heads the winemaking team as generation 10. A cellar door that’s the epitome of classical, relaxed European cool - complete with bistro and outdoor petanque court. They’re open for tastings daily, with tours of the barrel room and winery also on offer by appointment.

870-872 Maroondah Hwy, Coldstream VIC 3770, open 7 days.

Helen & Joey Estate have recently opened their swish new Re’em digs - a real location to impress. Their super yum Yarra Valley chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon are all on fine, full show here, with an option to either taste overlooking the vines or amongst the barrels downstairs. It’s a location perfect for making a weekend of it too - with their fine-dining restaurant & boutique hotel located on site. In a word - exquisite.

@medhurstwines

Medhurst Estate

Set on a ridgeline in Gruyere, Medhurst Estate’s modern cellar door is a real looker in more than one sense of the word. Kick back with a tasting flight of their estate wines overlooking the vineyard and winery - their kitchen is open for lunch from Friday-Sunday if you’re feeling peckish too, with a light menu highlighting the best regional producers.

@robdolanwine

Rob Dolan

You’ll find Rob Dolan’s eponymous cellar door at the footsteps of the Yarra Valley in Warrandyte South - just a short hop, skip and 30 minute drive from Melbourne CBD. With their wine specialists on hand to take you through a tasting flight, wines by the glass or the bottle, it’s a great spot to relax and unwind with some great wines - with paired grazing platters available if you’d like to snack along too. They’re dog friendly to boot (and if you’re lucky you’ll bump into Merlot, their resident pooch).

Address: 21-23 Delaneys Rd, Warrandyte South VIC 3134, open 7 days.
